Teen charged with murder of rapper Abiola Akerele ‘Nayta The King’ in east London

Despite the efforts of the emergency services, Mr Akerele was pronounced dead at the scene

A teenager has been charged with the murder of an east London grime rapper stabbed to death in broad daylight.

Abiola Akerele, 28, who performed as Nayta The King, was assaulted in a fight at about 3.20pm in Stondon Walk, East Ham on December 29.

Officers attended with paramedics and London’s air ambulance to find Mr Akerele with a knife injury to his chest.

Despite the efforts of the emergency services, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

A post-mortem found Mr Akerele’s cause of death to be a stab wound to the heart.

Police said his next of kin continue to be supported by specialist officers.

Abbots Road, Newham hours later, was due to appear in custody at Thames Magistrates’ Court on Saturday accused of murder.

Yesterday, a 17-year-old girl and 20- year-old man were also arrested on suspicion of murder. Both remain in police custody.

Formerly a member of grime collective The Mucky Wolfpack, Mr Akerele appeared on national radio and Tim Westwood’s BBC 1Xtra show.

One online tribute read: “He was a talented artist and a funny guy. Thoughts with all his family and friends.”

Another said: “Rest in peace Abiola ‘Nayta’ Akerele who tragically lost his life to knife crime today in East Ham.”

Detective Inspector Joanna Yorke, from the Met’s Specialist Crime Command (Homicide), said: “Our investigation is continuing at pace and we are working tirelessly to give Abiola’s family the answers they deserve.

“This murder took place in daylight, in a residential area, at a time when we know many people were in their homes.

“I believe that there will be people in the local community who either saw, heard or know something about this incident. I urge those people to get in touch.”
